Report

Introduction
The Final Round of the ACM-ICPC 2004 Asia Regional Dhaka Site Event was held on Friday 8 October 2004 at North South University. The entire event went extremely smoothly making it a grand success.

Preparation and Registration
This year the Dhaka Site had decided to hold the preliminary round competition on Internet if the total accepted registration exceeds 80 teams. By the registration deadline as high as 148 teams registered online out of which 96 teams including 4 foreign teams had completed their registration and was accepted for the contest. Instead of eliminating 16 teams through the Preliminary Round contest on internet, it was decided to advance all the 96 teams to the Final Round to be held on 7-8 October 2004.

Contest Day 7-8 October 2004

The practice session went well on 7 October 2004 in spite of heavy downpour making it a bit inconvenient for some of the contesting teams. A total of 92 teams participated in the practice session that went extremely well.

The Final Round of the contest started at 8:20 AM on 8 October 2004 that is 20 minutes behind schedule. All the 96 teams were present. The contest run extremely smoothly throughout and the entire systems team headed by Dr. Farruk Ahmed, Director, Information Services Department, were very happy with the performance of our system.

The final standing shows that Fudan University of China became the champion by solving 6 problems out of 8 problems. Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) became the runner-up by solving 5 problems and the National University of Singapore became 3rd by solving 4 problems and a team from North South University became 4th by solving 2 problems.

We provided refreshments for the contestants, coaches, judges and volunteers and arranged for lunch for all of them at Dominous Pizza.

The award ceremony was held at 6:30 PM at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel with Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Honorable Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, as the chief guest. Mr. M.A. Hashem, Chairman, Board of Governors, North South University Foundation attended the ceremony as a special guest. Prizes were distributed to the top 13 teams (by institution ranking).

A cultural program that included a few songs and a dance followed the ceremony. Finally, everybody was invited for the Dinner at the same venue. About 540 persons attended.
