 Introduction 

North South University is pioneer among the Universities of South East Asian countries to establish Confucius Institute in the region. Backed by Hanban, North South University (NSU) signed an agreement with Yunnan University (YU) of Kunming, China to establish Confucius Institute at NSU. In view of the growing importance of the People's Republic of China in all areas of World Politics and World trade and commerce, it has become imperative that we know more about Chinese culture and civilization. It is known that language is the most important tool of communication for mankind and also the key carrier of cultures. The dissemination of language and exchange of cultures is the bridge to enhance understanding and friendship among countries.

 Organization 

The Director of Confucius Institute at NSU is Dr. Khaliquzzaman M Elias. The main instructor is Professor Jiang Yinlian and is helped by a volunteer teacher Ms Chen Lin. All teachers at CI are native Chinese and all teaching materials are supplied by the Chinese government.

 Chinese Language Courses 

Students who are interested in learning Chinese can join our courses offered with support from Yunnan University of China. The course duration is three months starting with beginners' course and leading to a one-year certificate course. After successful completion of the one-year(three levels) course a certificate is awarded.

 Eligibility 

At least completion of the Higher Secondary School Certificate / high school diploma or equivalent.

 Admission Information 

Chinese Language Course Admission Form is available in the NSU Accounts Department for Tk 200. A passport size photograph with filled out admission form can be submitted along with the course fee of Tk 3000 in favor of Confucius Institute at NSU. Each semester admission deadlines and date of starting of the course are published in dailies of the country.

 Teachers 

All teachers at CI are native Chinese and all teaching materials are supplied by the Chinese government. Professor Jiang Yinlian is the main instructor and helped by a volunteer teacher Ms Chen Lin.

 Scholarship 

Chinese government scholarships are available for deserving candidates to learn Chinese language in China for one year free of cost. Last year six students of this institute went to China with this scholarship. This year three students went each with 2 year scholarship to learn Chinese.

 Facilities 

Well-equipped Air Conditioned class rooms with all modern amenities. Listening devices would be introduced soon when the listening section will be built.

 Activity 
During the visit with the president of the peoples republic of Bangladesh Dr Eajuddin Ahmed, Professor Wu Song, president of Yunnan University, Dr Hafiz G A Siddiqi, VC of North South University and Dr Khaliquzzaman Elias, Director of Confucius Institute at NSU were seen. Chinese Spring Festival being celebrated at NSU

Confucius Institute celebrates the biggest Chinese ceremony Spring festival in late February-early March. In 2006, Confucius Institute jointly with Chinese embassy of Dhaka organized a celebration of the spring festival on 4 March 2007 at NSU. Top echelon of NSU and the embassy of the People's Republic of China were present. Certificates were awarded to the seven candidates of first batch who had completed one year of learning Chinese language at NSU. The VC of NSU and Cultural Attaché of Chinese Embassy distributed certificates among them. Certificates were given among the seven candidates of first batch who had completed one year of learning Chinese language at NSU. Students offered different events: lion dance, martial arts, a short drama, recitation of Chinese poem, and a video presentation of spring festival. Later, there was raffle draw with the entry tickets and prizes were distributed.

Besides offering Chinese as a foreign language, the institute engages in many other activities such as organizing seminars on all aspects of cultural life, holding musical and theatrical events, exhibiting painting, sculptures and screen movies to sharpen and deepen our knowledge and understanding of China in its past, present, and future.

This institute will be the gateway through which the vast and prosperous realm of Chinese culture will slowly unfold its splendor to the younger generation of our country.

CI Students participated the Chinese Bridge Competition at the Chinese Embassy CI students sang China-Bangladesh friendship song at the celebration ceremony of China’s 58th Anniversary

The song was composed by leading lyricist & composer Moniruzzaman Monir and translated in Chinese by Professor Jiang Yinlian.
