Dr. Md. Ismail Hossain is a Professor of Economics at North South University. From 2019 to 2023, he held the esteemed position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor at North South University. As Pro-Vice-Chancellor, he provided academic and administrative leadership to continually improve the university’s academic performance and co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Prior to this role, Dr. Hossain held high senior management positions, including the founding Head of the Economics Department and Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Provost of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall and Chair of the Economics Department at Jahangirnagar University, and Chair of Economics at North South University.

Dr. Hossain has also been a member of university statutory bodies, including the Senate, Syndicate, and Academic Council, and various committees, including the Finance Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the Faculty Selection and Promotion Committee. He has also served as an external member of these committees of other universities.

Dr. Hossain has served as a member of various committees and bodies set up for public organizations, including a member of the Panel of Economists of the Seventh and Eighth Five Year Plans of Bangladesh; a member of the technical committees with the BBS and Director, Board of Directors of Bangladesh Bank. He has served as editor and academic referee of journals and held positions in elected committees.

He has published articles in national and international academic journals and contributed to and published books. His research interest includes macroeconomic modeling, trade, economic development, and the labor market. He has supervised more than a dozen PhD theses while serving at Jahangirnagar University and worked as an external member of PhD Examination Committees in Bangladesh’s top universities. He has provided expert counsel to the Government of Bangladesh, the World Bank, ADB, ILO, UNDP, DFID, and FAO.

Dr. Hossain received his PhD and MA from the University of Toronto as a Canadian Commonwealth Scholar. He earned his MA (Econ.), first class (1st), and BA (honors), first class (2nd) from the University of Rajshahi and began his academic career as a lecturer at the same institution in 1974.
