Prof. Abdul Khaleque is a prominent Molecular Biologist and Biotechnologist with over a decade of experiences in basic research, teaching and industrial settings. He earned his Ph.D in Molecular Genetics from Kumamoto University, Japan and M.S in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from Dhaka University, Bangladesh.
Abdul Khaleque has returned to Dhaka in 2007 after almost 10 years with the commitment and dedication to work in the area of Biotechnology and Bioscience. He is currently working at North South University as Director, Office of Admissions and Professor of Biochemistry in the Dept. of Biochemistry & Microbiology. Prior to his current position he served as the Chair of the same department for more than 5 years. Based on his service, quality of work, capability and dedication towards NSU, authority has given him the honor to be the Marshal for the 18th and 19th Convocation. Before joining to NSU, Dr. Abdul Khaleque has worked with Invitrogen Corp. California, USA, where he worked closely with Quality Assurance and Quality Control to identify potential areas of improvement as they pertain to regulatory or scientific issues. Prior to Invitrogen Corp., Abdul Khaleque worked in Boston University and Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts, USA. In both institutes he was actively involved in cancer research directed at understanding the role of heat shock proteins in cancer metastasis. He was also involved with various research projects at national and internationally recognized research organizations such as ICDDRB and BIRDEM. He is well acquainted with general molecular biology, molecular pathology and biochemistry techniques.
Over the past 19 years his research works have focused on many contemporary issues related to the cancer biology, mitochondrial protein transport and regulation of protein phosphorylation in signal transduction pathways and antioxidant contents of Bangladeshi fruits and vegetables. His research finding has been published in several international journals including Journal of Biological Chemistry, Oncogene, Journal of Immunology, Trends in Biochemical Sciences, Signal Transduction Insights etc. Recently in 2015, he published two book chapters in “Foodborne Pathogens and Food Safety” (CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, USA)
Abdul Khaleque also worked as a visiting researcher at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia (2002) and Kumamoto University, Kumamoto, Japan (1997). He has been awarded with several prestigious awards, including Oncology Fellowship (2005) from Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts, USA; Monbusho Scholarship (1997) from Ministry of Education and Science, Japan; Chancellor award from the President of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh (1987).
Dr Khaleque possesses good communication, organizational, supervisory, research and teaching skills. In addition, he strives to be friendly and treat people with warmth and respect with his own interpersonal dealings.
