The North South Foundation

My heartfelt thanks to all my friends, family, students, faculty members and administrative staff here at NSU for congratulating me on my 3rd term as Chairman of North South University (NSU). It is an incredible honor for me to serve this institution, yet again.

NSU, a nonprofit organization, is not only the first private university in Bangladesh but first in South Asia. When NSU was established, no law existed to set up a private university in the country. From the insatiable desire to make higher education available to as many students as possible, including the poor and meritorious students, we were able to persuade and convince the then government in the year 1992. Later, the government enacted the Private University Act and began provisioning higher education in private sector. It was a momentous achievement culminated through years of hard work. NSU is a dream which came true.

By the grace of the Almighty, now we have a state-of-art campus with high-tech, modern teaching and research facilities. The 1.2 million sq. ft. floor space contains many classrooms, lecture theaters, exam halls and galleries equipped with the latest teaching aids such as multimedia and computer terminals. The NSU campus has been designed and built to meet the needs of a twenty-first century academic environment.

With the vision of further extension and to meet future development, NSU recently bought 250 bighas (83.33 acres) of land at Purbachal, Dhaka, Bangladesh. This campus will be approximately 15 times bigger than the current Bashundhara campus with residential facilities and with all modern amenities.

Currently, NSU has approximately 22,000 students. It has more than 400 core faculty members, including 150 Ph.D. holders. NSU has also 300 part time faculty members and 900 administrative staff. Our faculty members completed their Ph.D. and Master’s degrees mostly from North American Universities.

As of today, NSU has produced 18,000 graduates; all of whom go on to significant jobs, both at home and abroad, in a variety of fields and specialties. Many pursue higher studies and have been admitted to postgraduate programs at a number of the world’s top-ranking universities.

The School of Business and Economics of NSU was recently accredited by the prestigious Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), while its School of Engineering and Physical Sciences has programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Recently, NSU established the Genome Research Institute, the first of its kind in Bangladesh. The vision of the institute is to become the center of excellence in genomic research in Bangladesh and help improve the health of people in our region and around the world through advances in genomic medicine. NSU has also launched the Global Health Institute, which would be a leading collaborative center for research and innovation on Public Health and Climate Change issues.

Dr. Rita R. Colwell, Distinguished Professor of University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University, is the President of the NSU International Advisory Board. Our Advisory Board members are renowned scholars like Sir Richard John Roberts, a Nobel laureate.

I will always provide full support in achieving the vision of the university and enhancing the quality of higher education of the country. It is due to the support of our students, employees and well-wishers that NSU has reached this height of prominence in the education sector. We are committed delivering high quality education and working towards further improvements. I request you all to continue keeping trust in us & help us in building future leaders for the nation who are knowledgeable, informed, committed, capable and patriotic.

Thank you.
