This course focuses on the role of public policy in economic development and the political context in which policy decisions are taken. Topics covered include: a historical perspective on the evolution of development economics as an academic discipline; the international dimensions of development; macroeconomic stabilization; financial systems; agriculture and the microeconomics of rural organizations; labor markets and human resource development; environmental degradation; the notion of ‘shared growth’ and the nexus between democratic governance and development. This course emphasizes a blend of theory and evidence with the latter drawn primarily from the experience of Asian economies.
