PHR 123 - Physical Pharmacy-I |
| Course Detail: |
The course is designed to make familiar the physical properties of molecules in different states, the kinetic behavior of drugs, equilibrium nature of molecules in liquid, solid and gaseous phases, ionization character of drugs in solution and determination of stability or self-life of drugs by considering physical factors. States of matter: Gaseous state, liquid state, solid state, polymorphism. Changes in the state of matter: Latent heat, vapor pressure, boiling point, meting point and freezing point, sublimation, eutectic mixtures, aerosols. Solutions: Ideal and real solutions, Henry?s law, Nernst?s distribution law, solubility. Colligative properties of dilute solutions. Ionic equilibria: pH of solutions, acids and bases. Buffers and buffering agents: Buffer action, buffer equation, buffer capacity, biological and pharmaceutical buffers, buffered isotonic solutions. Chemical kinetics and drug stability: Rate and molecularity of reactions, Integrated rate equations; stability testing; accelerated stability studies, prediction of self-life, limitations of accelerated stability studies.
