| About Professor Rashid | Professor M Harunur Rashid(1939- )
There are three especially significant moments in his life
which Professor Rashid considers special gifts of God and
the humbly adds these he did not really deserve. The first
occasion was a kind of unexpected surprise that happened in
Nantes, France in the year 1994.
He attended the general assembly of the World University
Service (WUS) International, a body of 42 national
committees from across four continents which had
convened for its biennial general election. Professor
Rashid was elected President of WUSI which has its HQ
in Geneva. He succeeded two illustrious South Asians,
Dr. Zakir Hussain (1955) who later become the president
of India, and Dr. I H Qureshi (1968) an illustrious
educationist of Pakistan. The second occasion was his
appointment (1991) by the first Caretaker Head of
Government, former President Justice M Shahabuddin
Ahmed as the Director General of Bangla Academy.
The current President of Bangladesh, Professor Iajuddin
Ahmed, was then the Advisor for Culture who recommended
his appointment at a highly critical moment of the
Academy?s history. The third occasion was yet another
surprise. He was prevailed upon to contest the
biennial general election of the Asiatic Society of
Bangladesh, an apex body of about 1500 scholars of
Bangladesh which had its beginnings in Calcutta in
1784 with Sir William Jones, a great orientalist,
laying its foundation. Professor Rashid won a keenly
contested election and it was during his tenure as
President of Asiatic Society that the Banglapedia was
formally launched and made aviable project (a 10 core
private sector project was then deemed a distant dream
by many).
