Mathematics & Physics
Research Targets for 2019-2023

The Department of Mathematics and Physics currently has twenty seven core faculty members. Sixteen out of twenty seven core faculty members have PhD degree in mathematics or physics from North America or Western Europe. The breadth of expertise of our faculty members covers entire range of pure and applied mathematics as well as theoretical physics. This Department currently offers mathematics, physics as well as statistics courses for the undergraduate students of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (SEPS). Besides that DMP also runs a Minor in Mathematics Program.

The DMP has been organizing regular Bi-weekly colloquium on “Application of Mathematics and Physics in Real Life” since summer 2015. Our faculty members publish a significant number of papers every year in well reputed research journals and conference proceedings. The trend of increasing publications number leads to transform our Department research mission into a resource center of mathematics and physics expertise at the national and international level. Towards that goal, we have set the following targets for the next five years (2019-2023):

In 2019: We want to offer an undergraduate program major in Mathematics that will ensure our own students whom we could involve in the research of our faculty members. We will also try to procure internal and external research fund. That surely will foster DMP’s research output.

In 2020: A good number of DMP faculty members work on NSU funded research projects in computational mathematics areas and they recruits research assistants (RA). Other than NSU funded projects a good number of students from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at NSU is doing research with different faculty members in the area of computational mathematics. For enhancing the research facility of DMP, we want to set up a research lab as “Center for Scientific Computing” with fifteen to twenty desktop computers in where the RAs and other research students will use these computers for doing research with the help of remote access to our SEPS High Performance Computing (HPC) facility. We do believe that this “Center for Scientific Computing” will enhance our research output.

In 2021: Following the DMP’s biweekly colloquium, we want to host one national or international conference on “Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics” in order to involve NSU students and faculty members in the research as well as to broaden interdepartmental research collaboration. We will try to organize this conference as a biannual event and publish the accepted conference papers in any SCOPUS indexed conference proceedings, such as ELSEVIER Procedia and American Institute of Physics (AIP) etc.

In 2022: We will try to offer graduate programs Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences (AMCS) as well as in Theoretical Physics based on the intensive research. It would be an accelerating movement for reaching to apex in research output.

In 2023: With the basis of previous year’s accomplishment, we will try to publish fifty SCOPUS indexed journal and conference papers that will leads to DMP at NSU as a physics and mathematical knowledge hub in home and abroad.

English & Modern Languages
Research Plan and 5-year Targets
  • Every faculty member will have a minimum of 3 publications over a period of 5 years. The advisory committee will decide on the acceptability of the peer-reviewed journals.
  • Faculty members will be encouraged to pursue the highest degree in their respective fields.
  • UGC, World Bank, and TESOL related research grants will be explored. Scholarships and postdoctoral programs can also be explored.
  • Establishing a center for advanced studies in Language, Literature and TESOL by 2024. This center will promote research, publications, and national and international collaborations. The areas of focus for the center will be: Bangladeshi writing in English, Translations, Teaching of English to Speakers of Bangla (TESB), and establishing the Dhaka school of thought in linguistics and semiotics.
Dissemination
  • International conferences will be held in 2019 and 2022.
  • The department will continue to arrange monthly discourse series lectures, and Colloquia, reaching out to scholars from home and abroad.
  • MoU’s with international institutions will be explored, and collaboration with Stony Brook University, NY, Yunnan University China, and CIS will continue.
Political Science & Sociology
Research Strategic Plan
Group/Specialization: Political Science and Public Administration
  1. Research Area Identification or Specification of Research Area
With a goal to specialize in specific areas of Political Science and Public Administration, the group identified two key areas of research – (i) Electoral Governance and (ii) Governance - to focus in the immediate future. The factors behind determining two key areas were current experts/ resources within the department and contemporary global issues.
  1. Electoral Governance and Voting Behavior
Under this research theme, initial aim is to capture the upcoming elections in different countries of South Asia with a particular focus on the voting behavior of people.
  1. Governance linking with SDGs
This broad theme will serve to capitalize the multidisciplinary resource pool within the department to observe the progress of different SDGs.
  1. Dissemination
Dept. of PSS will employ three types of dissemination: international conference, case studies as course materials and academic workshop on electoral governance.
  1. International Conference on ‘Rohingya issue(s)’
The department will organize an International Conference on Rohingya Issue in 2019 (most likely during Summer 2019) to host all national and international researchers working on Rohingya issue.
  1. Prepare a Case Study book/ textbook for Public Administration and Political Science.
Realizing the scarcity of Bangladesh specific case studies, PSS aims to develop case studies for undergraduate courses on political science and public administration.
  • Arrange an academic workshop on ‘Electoral Governance’ after the next national election.
In 2019, PSS will arrange a national level workshop to reflect upon the elections in different countries of South Asia.
  1. Engagement (Rolling Basis)
    • Alumni Engagement.
    • Build relationships with stakeholders.
    • Affiliation with Development Partners.
    • Affiliation with Academic Institutions.
Group/Specialization: Sociology and Anthropology Long-term Goals
  1. International Center for Advanced Research in Social Sciences (ICARSS).
    • Searching forthe fund.
    • Commissioned research.
    • Collaboration and Specialization.
  2. Publication
    • To establish an international level publishing unit from the department.
Mid-term Goals
  1. Within 03 years’ time at least two publications and preparation for an online journal registration with ISSN.
  2. In 3 years, a book structure/layout/first chapters’ draft [one Text Book on Sociology and one for Anthropology].
  3. International Collaboration (specific MoUs that can help the establishment of the research Centre/institute.
  4. In 3 years’ time at least 2 or 3 big research projects with international collaboration.
  5. At least two international conferences or seminar arrangement to attract the international community showing the ability to run the research Centre or for international accreditation about that.
Short-term Goals (1-year time)
  1. Research on how to apply for online journal registration, call for papers for first printed volume or an edited book.
  2. Forming a team of 3 persons for book and chapter planning for sociology and anthropology textbook in two separate groups. The team members would start drafting their outline for the chapters at the end of the first
  3. Self-motivated team formation among faculties for hunting collaborative research projects.
  4. Take the preparation for a first international conference on sociology and anthropology issues.
  5. Conducting two workshops/seminar on contemporary social and cultural burning issues.
Designing flyers and adverts for sociology and anthropology courses. First designing for the professionalcourse could give a chance to enhance the steps in popularizing SOC and ANT.
