Md Arif Istiaque Khan is a Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at North South University. He holds an M.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering with a major in Environmental Engineering from the University of Toronto and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). His academic and professional interests are centered on water and wastewater treatment and associated infrastructure, drinking water quality, environmental monitoring, ETP/STP design and optimization, environmental impact assessment (EIA), water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and sustainable urban water systems.
His M.A.Sc. research at the University of Toronto investigated biofiltration-related N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursors in drinking water treatment systems. The study characterized these precursors according to their dissolved and particulate fractions, quantified their removal during biofiltration, and examined their potential breakthrough following filter backwash. This work reflects his broader interest in understanding how treatment processes, operational conditions, and water quality parameters influence the formation and control of emerging contaminants and disinfection by-products.
Prior to joining NSU, he worked in Canada as a Process Designer at R.V. Anderson Associates Ltd. and as a Water Engineer at Arcadis Canada. His consulting experience includes municipal water and wastewater infrastructure, sewage pumping stations, headworks and aeration systems, secondary clarifier replacement, tertiary filtration, packaged water treatment plants, watermains, point-of-entry systems, Class Environmental Assessment, construction-project management, contract administration, tender/procurement support, and coordination with public-sector clients and funding agencies.
At NSU, he aims to combine teaching, applied research, and professional engineering practice. His long-term objective is to contribute to water, sanitation, and environmental management challenges through research-informed teaching, practical engineering solutions, capacity building, and collaboration with public agencies, donor-funded projects, utilities, industries, and the consulting sector.
