About

Dr. Samrin Ahmed Kusum is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DCEE) at North South University (NSU), Bangladesh. She is a Civil and Environmental Engineer with over 12 years of combined experience spanning academic teaching, funded research, and professional engineering practice in both Bangladesh and the United States.

Dr. Kusum completed her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), with a major in Environmental Engineering and a minor in Structural Engineering. Upon graduating, she immediately stepped into academia, serving first as a Lecturer at the University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS) and then as a Senior Lecturer at Stamford University Bangladesh. She then pursued a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Environmental) at North Carolina State University (NC State), USA. Her doctoral research addressed one of the most persistent challenges in urban water infrastructure: the accumulation of fat, oil, and grease (FOG) deposits in sewer collection systems, a phenomenon responsible for 25% of sanitary sewer overflows in the United States and costing $25 billion annually in maintenance.

Following her Ph.D., Dr. Kusum continued as a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at NC State (2023–2024), where she directed a research team on a $550,000 project investigating the health risks of climate change and ambient air pollution. She subsequently joined the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) where she reviewed public water system projects for compliance with the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act and North Carolina drinking water statutes. Dr. Kusum has contributed to over $800,000 in funded research projects and has published in leading peer-reviewed journals. She is deeply committed to student-centred teaching and impactful research that addresses real-world sustainability challenges in water and environmental engineering.
