Dr. S M Ashfaqul Hoq began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), which he completed in June 2007. Following his undergraduate studies, he worked for a year in the construction industry as a Project Engineer before moving to the United States to pursue graduate education. He did his Masters in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), TX, USA in Spring 2010, where he was awarded the prestigious Graduate Dean’s Master’s Fellowship. His master’s research, conducted under the supervision of Dr. Ali Abolmaali, aimed to develop a novel frame shape to improve building performance under earthquake excitations. He completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering from the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY, USA in Summer 2020. His doctoral research under supervision of Dr. Johnn P. Judd focused on nonlinear, performance-based engineering of wind-excited structures using experimental methods (i.e., aerodynamic boundary layer wind tunnel tests) and analytical modeling.
Dr. Hoq is currently serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at North South University (NSU), Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he has been a faculty member since September 2013. Before joining NSU, he also held teaching positions at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) and Stamford University Bangladesh, where he gained valuable academic experience and contributed to structural engineering education and research. His research interests include Waste materials in concrete production, Wind Engineering: Design loads, Inelastic design for wind, Earthquake Engineering, and Framing System for Lateral Loading.
