Program : Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Overview

The MBA program of the School of Business aims at developing managers and leaders of the 21stcentury. It is a flexible and career oriented program designed to meet the needs of the professionals in the computer world. The MBA program has been designed following the guidelines of the American ( Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the highest accreditation body of body of business schools in USA. It is global, computer oriented, fast track, and competitively priced. The program is open to all college graduates. It helps prepare them for a major career change. Faculty members are educated and trained in North American or equivalent universities. Classes are held four days a week (Sun-Wed) starting at 7:00 p.m. in the evening. The timing helps full-time professionals to attend the class.

Program Description

NSU MBA is a 60-credit program (20 courses of 3 credits) with five major components: (i) foundation courses (24 credits), (ii) advanced courses (15 credits), (iii) integrative courses (3 credits;) (iv) concentration courses (12 credits) and (v) open electives (6 credits).

Course Sequence

Students are required to take courses in a pre determined sequence offered throughout the year. The yearly schedule of MBA program helps students make advance planning in taking the courses. The following courses are currently offered in the MBA Program.

Course Description

BUS 500 - Communication Skills for Managers

This course examines communication tools and techniques in different business settings. Participants will learn effective ways of conducting official correspondence and writing business reports from a real-life perspective. Major topics will include communication process, models of communication, principles of effective verbal and non-verbal communication, writing and presenting research reports, and communicating with stakeholders.

BUS 501 - Business Mathematics

This course enables students to learn mathematical tools to solve business problems. Topics include review of set theory, polynomial functions, vectors and matrices, application of differentiation, techniques of integration, and decision making with linear programming.

BUS 505 - Accounting Principles

An overview of financial and managerial accounting. Topics include principles and concepts of accounting, balance sheet equation, measurement of income, valuation of assets, corporate financial reports and their value, analysis of financial statements, use of ratios, basic costing methods and techniques, use of cost data for control and decision making, standard costing & budgeting and its behavioral implications

BUS 511 - Business Statistics

This course focuses on basic statistical analysis from the perspective of manager. It covers descriptive analysis of data-measures of central tendency and dispersion, fundamentals of probability theory and applications, correlation and multiple regressions. Special focus is given identification of a business research problem, development of a theoretical/conceptual model as well as regression model (and hypotheses) for the business issue, design of questionnaire, data collection, and use of statistical regression software such as SAS/SPSS. Also, it includes test of hypotheses, analysis of empirical findings and writing of statistical report in the form of research paper. 

BUS 516 - Computer Information Systems

This course is designed to give the prospective manager a foundation in CIS to understand and use information systems at the personal and organizational levels. Topics include introduction to computer fundamentals: hardware, software, microprocessors, storage media and operating systems (DOS, Windows 95), word processing (MS Word 97), spreadsheets (MS Excel 97), database system basics (Foxpro) and an introduction to C

BUS 518 - Business Law and Ethics

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of legal and ethical issues of business. The legal environment and business laws in the local context are covered. The course specifically focuses on laws relating to formation of contract, remedies in case of breach of contract and types of contract; employment of labor laws; and laws relating to corporate formation, its governance and corporate finance. Ethical issues confronting managers in the local and global context will be discussed through case analysis.

BUS 520 - Management and Organizational Behavior

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with both traditional and emerging concepts and trends of management and organizational behavior. Students are prepared for general management and supervisory positions and are provided background for further study in specialized topics in management and organizational behavior. Covers issues of individual behavior, group functioning and the actions of organizations in their environments. Problems of work motivation, task design, leadership, communication, organizational design and innovation are analyzed using multiple theoretical perspectives. Implications for the management of organizations are illustrated through examples, cases and exercises.

BUS 525 - Managerial Economics

This course builds a foundation in economics for business managers. Starts with the economic principles- theories of demand supply, it develops the application of the economic analysis to the formulation of managerial decision-making process. Specific topics included are: consumer and producers theories; elasticity of demand and supply; demand estemation and forcasting; theory of cost; market structure-perfect competition; monoploy, duopoly, oligopoly and monopolostic competition; market imperfections; pricing policy; game thoery and risk analysis.

BUS 530 - Economic Conditions Analysis

This course primarily cobvers macroeconomic issues affecting business decisions at namagertial level. Starting from the market analysis and comparative statics, it covers the analyses of the ecomomy as a system. Specific topics include: national income accounting; budget; business cycle; inflation; unemployment; consumption; investment; interest rates; exchange rates; general growth theory; fiscal & monetary policies; and overall national and global economic conditions affecting managerial decisioins.

BUS 601 - Human Resource Management

Provides an understanding of personnel management issues such as hiring, training, selection and grievance handling. Focuses on individual, interpersonal, group and intergroup behavior, and group dynamics. Explores leadership, power, conflict, diversity and change and addresses what managers can do to improve results by influencing people?s behavior

BUS 620 - Marketing Management

This course provides an introduction to the variables and functions in the management of a corporate marketing effort. It includes the study of theory, while developing a practical knowledge of the marketing management system and its key components. Topics include market segmentation, product planning, pricing strategy, distribution, promotion, buyer-supplier relations, marketing research, marketing plans and marketing strategy, and strategic marketing.

BUS 635 - Managerial Finance

This course presents the basic principles and analytical techniques of financial management. The main objective here is to familiarize students with basic financial concepts, methods and techniques managers use to successfully run the financial affairs of a company. Major topics to be covered in this course include time value of money, security valuation, risk and return, bond and equity valuation and market, fund management, capital budgeting, cost of capital, net working capital and short term financing decisions.

BUS 685 - International Business

This course aims at providing an understanding of international business from a global/multinational perspective. It focuses on the management challenges associated with developing strategies and managing the operations of companies whose business activities spread over more than one nation. The course analyzes the internationalization process in small, medium and large corporations, compares and contrasts different internationalization strategies, examines managing political risks and ethical issues in international business, and studies functional management of the transnational corporation, i.e. financial management, marketing management, human resource management, accounting and taxation issues

BUS 690 - Strategic Management

This is an integrative capstone course for MBA students. It is inter-disciplinary in nature and covers all aspects of business management. The course has a global perspective and uses extensive case analysis to familiarize student with real life organizational issues

FIN 637 - Investment Theory

Examines the investment environment and process. An investment is the current commitment of money or other resources in the expectation of reaping future benefits. The investment process involves identifying objectives and constraints, formulating and implementing strategies, and monitoring and updating the portfolio as needed. Major topics include investment alternatives, securities markets and trading mechanism, risk and return analysis, modern investment theory, valuation, analysis and management of bonds, common stocks and derivative securities, and investment performance evaluation.

FIN 639 - Corporate Finance

This course covers technical topics that have a significant impact on financial statements and their analysis. It exposes students to corporate financial decisions and how a corporation operates within the economic environment. FIN 640 - Real Estate Finance

Focuses on theories and practices of financing real estates and social, legal and economic implications of real estate finance. Topics include real estate instruments and procedures, financing considerations and methods, real estate credit and mortgage markets, and government regulations and legal aspects of real estate finance.

FIN 642 - Financial Markets and Institutions

Provides an advanced understanding of money and capital markets and financial instruments traded in these markets. Topics include pricing and structure of securities in both equity and debts markets, derivatives markets and instruments, financial institutions as suppliers of funds to the money and capital markets, comparative financial policies, interest rate structure, and management of major financial institutions such as insurance companies and investment banks.

FIN 643 - Management of Financial Institutions

Analyses the environment, structure, and operations of depository financial institutions while concentrating most heavily on commercial banks. Revises the complex role of depository institutions within a changing industry and examines criteria used to measure performance. Examines the exposure of various kinds of risks and methods used to minimize those risks. Cases and current issues are both used.

Examines tools and technics to manage commercial banks effectively. Topics include architecture and evaluations of financial statements, interest rate risks and credit risks, investment portfolio, Liquidity and reserves, sources of funds, managing loans and client relationships, and special issues of commercial banking

FIN 645 - International Financial Management

Deals with the international aspects of corporate finance and investment. Topics include foreign exchange with emphasis on exchange rate determination, exchange risk, hedging and interest arbitrage, international money and capital markets, international financing, multinational capital budgeting, cost of capital, and international portfolio management.

FIN 647 - Financial Derivatives

Discusses various aspects of derivative securities such as options, futures and forward contracts. Also discussed are basic characteristics and valuation of these derivative securities. Emphasis on theory of options and futures pricing and its use in portfolio management.

FIN 650 - Project Appraisal

A specialized course on appraising financial and capital projects. Topics include definitions, classification, and necessities of a project, aspect of project analysis, initiating, implementing and terminating a project, issues in social cost benefit analysis, techniques of project management, and project appraisal practices in Bangladesh.

MKT 621 - Buyer Behavior

This course aims at providing an overview of consumer behavior concepts, theories, research, and applications in marketing. It is designed to develop knowledge and skills that will facilitate an understanding of buyer behavior which can be integrated into the formulation of marketing strategies. This is accomplished by surveying the social science foundations of consumer behavior, in particular, the contributions from psychology and sociology. Various types of consumer research will be introduced. The course focuses on the content and logical application of concepts and theories in the analysis of consumer behavior for solving marketing management problems. A combination of lectures, exercises, team projects and class presentations is designed to provide students with the opportunity to appreciate the role of sales management and issues important to sales managers.

Examines physical distribution concepts from a cost-saving, customer satisfaction and competitive effectiveness point of view. Topics included single plant - single market, single plant - multiple market, types and nature of inventory decisions, locations decisions, organizational responsibility, organizational alternatives etc.

Building upon foundation in statistics, this course develops an understanding of market research methodology as applied to national and international markets. This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of survey research. Specifically, the course will focus on the major aspects of survey research including problem identification, data collection, sampling, questionnaire design, data analysis and report writing

MKT 633 - Global Marketing

The course is designed to review the basic concepts and theories of international marketing; familiarize the students with the environmental forces that the international marketer must understand and take into consideration while taking marketing decisions, discuss various activities necessary for international marketing, elaborate, with examples, marketing dimensions such marketing mix including product, pricing, distribution and promotion, discuss techniques of formulating and implementing strategies most relevant to marketing management, given global operations of MNCs, focus on the trend of globalization and its implications for international marketing, discuss the impact of Regional Economic Cooperation on the behavior of international marketer, and ethics and International Marketing.

MKT 634 - Marketing Strategy

This course is designed to be a capstone course addressing the tasks and responsibilities of a marketing manager. On completion of this course one should feel confident in analyzing and understanding marketing situations and to be able to organize and plan strategic marketing alternatives and develop tactical alternatives and marketing strategies. The emphasizes course on application of theoretical concepts and techniques learned in the class room to real world marketing problems. The cases to be studied in this course will bring real world marketing problems in the class room

Survey of the current literature in Management Science, examines principles and practices of scientific management. Selected topics in Management Science include: MBO, duality, networks, simulation, competitive bidding, dynamic programming, integer non linear programming, Markov decision problems, and queuing theory etc. Computer applications to solve operations management problems are also included.

MGT 605 - Industrial Management & Labor Relations

This course studies the scope and nature of industrial management particularly in Bangladesh. Focuses on the procedure, subject matter, and legal framework of collective bargaining, role of unionism in industrial, manufacturing, and service sectors. Labor negotiation processes and techniques are examined. ILO conventions, Labor Issues under World Trade Organization etc. are also explored

MGT 607 - Entreprenuership

This course deals with the procedure of establish of new business ventures, and covers topics, such as characteristics of an entreprenuer, pooling of resources, networking, site development, market analysis, staffing, inventory control, human relations, funding etc. As a part of the course, students will prepare a comprehensive business plan for starting or acquiring such a business; It also studies various aspects of business development, problems of existing small business in Bangladesh. An overview of Small and Cottage Industries in Bangladesh will be done

MGT 610 - Management of Technology and Innovation

This course examines how innovation and technology created by scientists and engineers can be strategically managed and integrated with the organizational needs to achieve competitive advantage. Topics include management of technology in manufacturing and service industries; importance of R & D management, technology transfer and organizational strategies in achieving and maintaining a competitive edge in the global market place; importance of integrating technology planning, product planning, business planning and the market demands; human, social and environmental concerns associated with technological change and market requirement; business strategy and technology strategy, technology planning and technology transfer; and acquisition and exploitation of technology. Local and global case studies with lessons from successful corporations in managing innovation and technology will be extensively used

Examines the development of service packages, yield management, scheduling, queuing, quality measurement, management of professional services such as health care, tax consulting services, travels and tourism, banking and transports, particularly in South Asian region. MGT 656 - Power, Leadership and Negotiations in Organization

This course deals with the analysis of individual behavior and influence in organization. Examines power structure and leadership theories applicable in modern business organization from the view point of organizational effectiveness. Role of power and leadership in decision making processes, communication, conflict resolution in large organizations including MNEs are explored, Negotiation theories, processes, and applications in modern & complex organizations are discussed. How to develop negotiation skills is also examined.

MGT 660 - Comparative Management

Comparative study of various management practices, the role of management theories and principles in different management practices; Special emphasis is given on US, European and Japanese management in contrast to management practices in Bangladesh. The Strategy concept, five Ps for strategy, strategy analysis, forecasting and strategy formation, 7-S framework, strategy and organization planning, the structuring of organization, study on different organizations such as entreprenuerial, mature, diversified, professional, innovative etc. Long range formal planning, elements of long range planning, design of a turnaround strategy, and managing strategies incrementally are examined through case studies

MGT 675 - Total Quality Management (TQM)

Examines major issues of TQM, principles and theories. Evolution of TQM as a separate body of management theory is addressed. Topics include: Deming?s, Juran?s and Crosby?s TQM principles, leadership information and analysis, JIT, strategic quality planning, employee involvement and empowerment, human resources management in TQM, management of process quality, quality and operational results, customer focus and satisfaction, buyer-supplier-customer relationships in TQM, TQM models, quality performance management, study of ISO 9000 series and their applicability in Bangladesh

MGT 680 - Supply Chain Management

Since its inception in early 1990s, the field of supply chain management has become tremendously important to companies in an incresingly competitive global marketplace. This course focuses on the network of companies that work together to design, produce, deliver, and service products. Major topics include material, information, and capital flows; challenges to effective supply chain management, including variability, organizational silos, the Bullwhip Effect, and tradeoffs; product design and metrics for supply chain management; B2B integration; supply chain strategies; and impact of internet on supply chain management.

This course presents the basic concepts and principles of environmental management, areas of global environmental concerns, strategies and tools for effective environmental management for managers of business and development organizations. Topics include: problems of development and production, the need for sustainable development, actions for environmental protection, environmental management tools ? environmental assessment, economic assessment of environmental consequences, environmental impact statements, environmental audits, waste minimization programs, life cycle assessments and environmental design. The course will also discuss the process of environmental certification under ISO14001

HRM 610 - Employment and Labor Laws in Bangladesh

This course analyzes employment practices law and its impact on employment decision-making. The course covers various employment and labor laws governing the labor-management relations in Bangladesh, such as, the factories act, the payment of wages act, the workmen's compensation act, the industrial relations ordinance, etc. Local cases focusing on different legal issues are used extensively.

This course focuses on the strategic role of human resource functions such as HR planning, recruitment, selection, compensation, performance appraisal and human resource development. Special emphasis is given on how these functions enable a company to achieve and sustain competitive advantage. Role of HRM in managing a global workforce, managing diversity and changing technologies, work-family integration, and competition in the labor market in the local and global context will be examined extensively

MIS 651 - System Design and Development

The course aims at introducing different steps involved in designing, developing and evaluating information system for organizations. Both theories and applications are equally emphasized. Participants will use different front-end tools in developing system prototype. It will also familiarize students with the Fourth Generation Language and other software. The course will also discuss steps in managing a system development project.

MIS 652 - Management Information Systems

This is a foundation course for management information system. It introduces basic theories of information system. The course will highlight the components of information system including front-end and back-end tools, and networking. Topics include different hardware, software and network configurations relevant in designing information system. Students will work on concepts of different information system modules such as database, expert system, artificial intelligence, interactive languages, and software and evaluate how these modules help solve different managerial problems.

MIS 654 - Database Management

This is a core course of database management system. Different database theories and their management applications are included in the topics. Emphasis is given on theories of relational and semantic models of database. The course highlights different database models, database connectivity, and database concepts including database administrations, data storage and organizing database files on different database environments. Students will work on different database tools and software.

MIS 656 - Applied Artificial Intelligence

This course introduces concepts of artificial intelligence system in solving specific management problems. Topics includes concepts and approaches in designing and developing artificial intelligence system with emphasis on neural networks, expert system, natural language processing, and robotics and their applications in today?s business strategy. Student will use different tools and techniques in designing and developing expert system.

MIS 658 - Computer-Based Simulation Systems

Discrete computer systems simulation using languages such as GPSS, GASP, or SLAM, Cases include queuing, layout planning and evaluation, and financial modeling. It requires completion of lower-division mathematics requirements and a course in a scientific programming language such as FORTRAN, PL/1, or PASCAL.
