Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Hasan Mahmud Reza completed his BPharm and MPharm degrees from the University of Dhaka and joined Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd as a Product Officer. After one and a half years, he left Beximco and joined Khulna University as a Lecturer in 1997. Later he moved to Japan to pursue his PhD under the Japan Government Scholarship Program (MONBUSHO/MEXT). Dr. Reza obtained his PhD in 2002 from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan in the field of molecular and developmental biology. His doctoral study mainly focused on the eye development. He revealed important roles of several transcription factor genes such as Pax6, Sox2 and L-Maf in lens and retina development.  His study involved extensive works on different cell lines as well as animal models like mice and chicks. Later he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher for one and a half years and then joined the Faculty of Biological Sciences, NAIST, Japan as an Assistant Professor and continued for 3 years. In 2007, Dr. Reza joined North South University (NSU) and currently he is working as a Professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, NSU. He worked as the Department Chair for about 5 years at NSU. He is still serving as a member of different committees at NSU. He has a solid experience of research and teaching for more than 20 years in reputed universities and institute in home and abroad.

Regenerative medicine is one of the major areas of Dr. Reza’s research. He worked as a Research Scientist at Singapore Eye Research Institute under National University of Singapore for two years and gained a solid experience in translational medicine, which is emerging as a curative treatment approach for many degenerative diseases. He cultured limbal, oral and conjunctival epithelial cells in vitro and engineered tissues for ocular surface reconstruction.  He characterized a novel umbilical tissue-derived epithelial stem cell which was shown to reconstruct cornea in an experimental rabbit model. He is currently leading several research teams dedicated to work on pharmaceutical dosage form development, behavioral neuroscience and lifestyle diseases like obesity, hypertension etc. Dr. Reza has published more than 100 international research articles and two book chapters. He presented his works in many international conferences in different countries including USA, Australia, Japan and Singapore. He has organized several international and national conferences/seminars, chaired different scientific sessions and delivered keynote speeches.

Dr. Reza completed his pre-university education from Jhenidah Cadet College and he stood 7th and 5th in the combined merit list in SSC and HSC examinations, respectively. Dr. Reza was awarded with merit scholarships, Chancellor's award and Dean's award for academic and research excellence.

Earlier he got several research grants from Japan, Singapore, the Ministry of Science and Technology, Bangladesh and North South University. Currently Dr. Reza is conducting several research projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Bangladesh (GARE), BMRC and NSU. He is also doing collaborative works with different universities home and abroad. He is serving as the President of Bangladesh Neuroscience Society (BNSS). Dr. Reza is an editorial board member of two international journals. He is also serving as an external member of different academic committees of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Khulna University and Jessore University of Science and Technology.

Regenerative medicine is one of the major areas of Dr. Reza’s current research. He is also working on dosage form development as well as different disease model development.

Areas of Expertise

Molecular biology and biochemistry: DNA recombination, gene cloning, plasmid construction, transformation, DNA amplification, prokaryotic protein expression and purification, primer designing, Real-time PCR, DNA/RNA gel electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE, DNA and RNA extraction, northern blot, western blot, DNA sequencing, gel-shift assay, RNAi experiment, polyclonal antibody production, cell-culture, reporter assay, RNA probe preparation, in-situ hybridization, immunostaining etc.
