Shabab Absarul Islam is a full-time Lecturer in the Department of Management at North South University, Bangladesh. My academic and professional journey reflects a balance of both teaching and industry experience, which allows me to bring real-world insights into the classroom.

Before joining academia, I gained diverse international and local work experience. I worked as a Trade Analyst at HSBC Bank in Canada, where I focused on global trade operations and financial analysis. Later, I served as an Operations Manager at FabriKite Inc., Canada, where I was responsible for managing business operations and ensuring efficiency in organizational processes. My career began as a Management Trainee at MGH Group in Bangladesh, which gave me a strong foundation in corporate management and leadership practices.

In terms of education, I completed my Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at North South University, specializing in International Business and Marketing. To further broaden my knowledge, I pursued my Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Thompson Rivers University, Canada, majoring in International Business and Strategic Management.

My research interests span across multiple areas of management and innovation, including Social Entrepreneurship, Artificial Intelligence, Food Management, Consumer Behavior and Strategic Management. I am particularly interested in how technology and entrepreneurship can be used to solve pressing social and economic challenges.

As a lecturer, I am deeply committed to engaging students in critical thinking, practical problem-solving and research. I strive to inspire the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs by blending theory with practice and encouraging innovative approaches to business and management.

2. Operations Manager, FabriKite Inc, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (2016-2018)

I began my journey at FabriKite Inc. as a member of the operations team and quickly advanced to a leadership role. During my time there, I managed clients across diverse industries including music, apparel, FCGI and 1WC, while leading teams to ensure smooth operational workflows. I organized and promoted music events, collaborating with both local and international artists, supporting grassroots movements and working on projects such as music videos for emerging talents and well-known artists like The Weeknd. I also worked closely with global clients in the apparel industry, building partnerships and enhancing brand visibility. Additionally, I coordinated artist schedules and projects, managing influencers and creators such as Superwoman (Lilly Singh) for music videos and social media campaign and contributed to FabriKite’s online presence through projects showcased on Facebook and fabrikite.com.

This role allowed me to gain strong experience in operations management, client relations, event organization and brand promotion, while working closely with both creative and corporate industries.

3. Trade Analyst, HSBC Bank, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (2017)

As Trade Analyst at HSBC Bank in Canada, I gained experience in international trade operations, compliance and client support. This role helped me build a strong foundation in global finance and cross-border business management.

4. Merchandiser, Visions Electronics, Kamloops, BC, Canada (2015)

I also gained retail experience at Visions Electronics in Canada, where I worked directly with customers and supported store operations. My role included handling sales transactions, assisting customers in a professional manner and promoting products and special events. I was also responsible for inventory management, merchandising and ensuring a welcoming store environment, which helped me strengthen my customer service, communication and operational skills.

5. Management Trainee, United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), MGH Group, Dhaka, Bangladesh (2014)

During my time at UASC (United Arab Shipping Company), I coordinated multi-continental delivery schedules and managed the daily operations of regional offices. I worked closely with international partners, acting as a liaison between the head office, clients and business associates from different countries. My responsibilities included setting performance goals, analyzing growth with management and promoting services to boost sales. I also handled financial matters such as invoicing, verifying NOCs and ensuring accurate transactions. In addition, I projected delivery dates, provided pricing quotes and booked shipments using specialized systems like Trust and ENS Process. I regularly collaborated with mother vessels, feeder vessels, depots, freight forwarders, consignees and shippers to ensure smooth logistics and timely deliveries.

6. Client Service, Magnito Digital, Dhaka, Bangladesh (2013-2014)

I also worked as a Client Advisor, where I supported clients by organizing presentations and meetings and collaborated closely with content creators to pitch creative ideas. This role strengthened my skills in client relations, communication, and project coordination.

7. Brand Amplifier, British American Tobacco, Dhaka, Bangladesh (2013)

I also worked as a Brand Amplifier for British American Tobacco, where I promoted the company’s products and actively participated in various events. This role helped me gain experience in marketing, event promotion and brand engagement.

8. Customer Service, Virgo Contact Service Ltd, Dhaka, Bangladesh (2012)

I began my professional journey as a Customer Service Agent at Virgo Contact Service Ltd while still a student. In this role, I assisted clients, resolved inquiries and ensured a positive customer experience. It was my first hands-on experience in communication, problem-solving and client relationship management, laying the foundation for my future career in business and management.

Courses I Teach:

1. Entrepreneurship (MGT 368)

In my Entrepreneurship course, I guide students through the process of creating and growing successful businesses. The course covers opportunity recognition, idea generation and business planning, including writing business plans and analyzing market potential. Students learn about funding sources, financial management, marketing strategies and operational planning, as well as legal and ethical considerations in business. I also focus on leadership, team building, risk management and strategies for scaling businesses. Additionally, the course explores social and sustainable entrepreneurship, encouraging students to create ventures with positive societal impact. Through hands-on projects that I assign, students develop their own startup ideas, apply practical strategies and pitch their concepts, gaining real-world experience in entrepreneurship.

2. Organizational Management (MGT 212)

In my Introduction to Management course, I introduce students to the fundamental principles and functions of management, including planning, organizing, leading and controlling. The course covers organizational structures, leadership styles, motivation, communication and decision-making, as well as the basics of human resource management such as recruitment, training and performance evaluation. Students also explore contemporary management trends, including globalization, technology and sustainable practices. Through real-world case studies, practical exercises and group projects, students gain hands-on experience applying management concepts to solve problems and make effective business decisions.

3. Internship (BUS 498)

In my Internship course, I guide students as they gain real-world corporate experience. I closely monitor their progress through weekly journals, workplace updates, final reports and viva sessions, ensuring they reflect on and document their learning. I also conduct regular meetings to discuss their experiences, provide guidance and help them connect classroom knowledge with practical workplace skills. This hands-on approach helps students develop professional competencies, understand corporate culture and prepare for future careers.
